Ontario Public Health PractionersIncome is a key determinant of health. Poverty (usually measured by income) and poor health are closely related. Poor people have the highest rates of illness and premature death. Notably, health improves with every step up the income ladder. Why? Income affects health by determining the degree of control people have over their lives, their ability to make choices and take action. Higher incomes let people live in better housing, buy better food, meet more than basic needs and generally have more control. Higher income makes it easier to get an education, which increases understanding of information about the impact of individual health practices, such as smoking or exercise.
