Why are multiple intervention programs so important in public health? Print E-mail

Ontario Public Health PractionersMultiple intervention programs reflect current thinking in public health (Merzel & D’Affletti, 2003; Edwards, Mill & Kothari, 2004) because they allow for:

  • A shift of focus from individual health behaviour to the underlying determinants of health (Refer to: Box D)
  • Commitment to the principles of social change (Refer to: Boxes J-L)
  • The complexity of public health issues
  • The benefits of introducing more than one intervention at more than one level
  • The increased need for collaboration among different sectors and across levels
